Carbs have been demonized for years as the culprit behind fat gain (and specifically, belly fat gain). But there are certain categories of carbs – for lack of a better term we call them “good” carbs – that actually help your body get or stay lean.
Some of these choices are controversial, but there’s real science behind the reason I chose them (and why I eat them).
My picks for the four good carbs to eat for a flat belly:
- Bananas (unripe!)
- Cooked (and then cooled) potatoes
These are my favorite good carbs because they are good for your gut, which is like your body’s command center. If you want to lose weight, things have to be right in your gut.
The bananas, potatoes and legumes contain resistant starch that feeds healthy bacteria in your gut, helping to heal it and soothe the digestive process. The berries are low in sugar and high in fiber.
And legumes? They get an undeserved bad rap. In addition to the resistant starch, they are packed with fiber and are high in protein. Plus, they keep you feeling full for hours.
